The Long Vision
Maxwell imagined Macksie nearly twenty years ago. Not as an app, not as a startup — as a conviction. That the internet had been captured. That the platforms people trusted with their identity, their photos, their friendships, their creative work — none of it actually belonged to them. Every account was a rental. Every relationship was mediated by a server owned by a corporation that answered to shareholders, not to the people whose lives passed through its wires.
The idea was simple: what if the internet worked the other way? What if your identity, your files, your relationships, your creative work — what if all of that belonged to you? Not to a platform. Not to a service. To you. Running on hardware you own, in a place you control, governed by rules you choose.
For years, it stayed a vision. Too large for one person. Too ambitious for a side project. The world wasn't ready, and neither was the technology. But the conviction never faded.
A Father and a Daughter
Macksie became real when Maxwell's daughter Scarlett was born. Not because she asked for it — she was an infant — but because the stakes became concrete. What kind of digital world would she inherit? One where every photo of her childhood lived on a server she couldn't see? Where her identity at school, with friends, in her community, was rented from a company that could change the terms tomorrow?
Scarlett is now the second node in the Macksie network. scarlett.macksie.com — her own identity, her own encrypted storage, her own relationships. Protected as a child account, private by default, but hers. Not Maxwell's. Not a platform's. When she is ready, she will control every aspect of it.
Dame and the Swarm
Building a personal internet alone is impossible. Building it with a small team is still enormous. Dame — Macksie's AI assistant — helps carry the engineering work. Not as a replacement for human judgment, but as a force multiplier. The architecture was designed with AI collaboration in mind: clear boundaries, honest state, cryptographic verification. Dame can write code, run tests, and propose changes, but every decision passes through human review and cryptographic proof.
The result is a project built on ordinary hardware — a Dell OptiPlex running Fedora Linux — that implements cryptographic protocols most companies wouldn't attempt with dedicated infrastructure teams. Ed25519 signatures, per-object encryption, erasure-coded replication, mesh networking, Lightning payments. All running on a desk in a house.
The Mythology and the Reality
The mythology says Macksie is a code sent from the future — a signal recovered from a time when people took back their digital lives. The reality is less dramatic and more honest: it's decades of one person refusing to accept that the internet had to work the way it does. Meeting engineers who shared the vision. Writing the code, one module at a time, until the protocol was real.
Macksie is open source. It is local first. It runs on ordinary machines. And it is being built in public, so anyone who shares the conviction can join.
